From airport transport hacks to choosing the right hotel and dining like a local, here’s everything you need to know before you go. Looking for great-value New York packages? Click&Go Holidays makes it easier to book not just your flights and your accommodation but also your attraction tickets too!

Getting from JFK to Manhattan

Skip the Taxi – Use the AirTrain + Subway Combo

One of Linda’s best New York travel tips is to skip the expensive taxi and instead take the AirTrain from JFK to Jamaica Station ($8.50) followed by the Subway into Midtown Manhattan ($3.20). This option is not only incredibly budget-friendly, but it’s also quick, easy, and luggage-friendly — ideal for solo travellers, couples, and families alike.

Tip: Avoid peak-hour traffic and get into the city smoothly and affordable.

Where to Stay – Match your Hotel to your Travel Style

First Timers & Families: Stay Near Time Square

According to Linda, if it’s your first time visiting New York or you’re travelling as a family, staying near Times Square is your best bet. This iconic neighbourhood is close to major attractions, Broadway theatres, and lots of family-friendly restaurants. Plus, with excellent public transport connections, it makes exploring the rest of the city a breeze.

Couples & Repeat Visitors: Try Central Park or Greenwich Village

Linda recommends near Central Park or Greenwich Village for couples or repeat travellers. These quieter, charming neighbourhoods offer a more authentic, local feel — with scenic walks, boutique hotels, and cosy cafés, perfect for a more relaxed New York city break.

Getting Around – Use the Subway like a local

Tap to Travel – It’s that easy

Linda’s tip for getting around NYC like a local? Use the subway. It’s fast, reliable, and incredibly cost-effective. You can simply tap your contactless card or Revolut card at the turnstile — no travel passes, or MetroCard needed. It’s convenient for every type of traveller, from solo city explorers to large families.

Note: Each person needs their own card, one card can’t be tapped for multiple people.

Navigating is Simple

It’s easy to figure out directions:

  • Uptown Trains head towards Central Park
  • Downtown Trains head towards the World Trade Centre

The subway is a far better alternative to taxis or Ubers, helping you save money while getting around quickly and easily.

Plan your Itinerary by Area – Maximise your Time

Day 1 – Downtown Manhattan

Linda suggests starting your trip in Lower Manhattan with a day packed with unforgettable sights:

  • Ride the free Staten Island Ferry for great views of the Statue of Liberty.
  • Visit the 9/11 Memorial & Museum
  • Head up to the One World Observatory
  • Explore the Oculus Shopping Centre
  • Walk around Wall Street and the New York Stock Exchange

Day 2 – Midtown Manhattan

Midtown is the heart of the action:

  • Discover the energy of Times Square
  • Marvel at Grand Central Terminal
  • Visit the Rockefeller Centre
  • Take in the views from SUMMIT One Vanderblit

Day 3 – Uptown & Central Park

Slow Things down a little with a relaxing uptown day:

  • Visit the American Museum of Natural History
  • Enjoy a peaceful walk-through Central Park
  • Browse the shops along Fifth Avenue

Tip: Grouping the sightseeing by area reduces travel time and helps you enjoy each day without feeling rushed.

See the City from Above – Visit an Observatory at night

One of Linda’s top tips? Plan one of your observatory visits for the evening. Watching New York skyline at night is truly magical. Whether you choose Top of the Rock, SUMMIT One Vanderbilt, or One World Observatory, each offers a breath-taking night-time experience with stunning photo opportunities.

Where to eat – Affordable Options across the City

Breakfast on a budget

Linda recommends skipping hotel breakfast and heading out for more local (and affordable) options. Grab a coffee and pastry from Starbucks, or enjoy a hearty American breakfast at Skylight Diner, located near the Wyndham New Yorker Hotel. It’s a great way to start the day without breaking your budget.

Quick & Classic NYC Lunch

For Lunch, Linda says it doesn’t have to get more New York than a slice of pizza or a hot dog from a street cart. These quick, tasty, and cheap meals are found all over Midtown and Downtown Manhattan, especially near major attractions.

For something more filling, Linda suggests visiting a local deli for a sandwich, soup or salad – perfect for a quick bite between sightseeing stops.

Dinner without the Tourist Prices

When it comes to dinner, Linda suggests eating where the locals eat. Explore the Upper East Side, especially around 79th Street and 2nd Avenue, where you’ll find great food at great prices. Another top pick? Irish pubs across the city – they serve generous portions of hearty comfort food like burgers, fish and chips, and daily specials all in warm and friendly atmospheres.

Pre-Book your Attractions and Save Up to 40%

Avoid Queues and Save Money on Top NYC Experiences

Linda’s Advice? Pre-book your attractions. Most major NYC sights – including observatories, museums, and city tours – offer discounted prices and skip-the-line access when booking in advance. Booking early means less time queuing and more time exploring.

Click&Go Holidays can help you book all your attractions in advance – just call us on 01-6995250 to talk to one of our USA Experts.

Don’t Miss a Broadway Show – A Must-do NYC Experience

Theatre Lovers and First Timers will be blown away

One of Linda’s biggest highlights from her New York trip was seeing a Broadway show – and it’s easy to see why. From The Lion King and Hamilton to newer hits and timeless classics, there’s nothing quite like the thrill of live theatre in the heart of Manhattan. Book Early to get the best seats and avoid disappointment, especially during peak travel periods.

Click&Go Holidays can include Broadway Tickets in your holiday package – just ask our team when booking.

New York for Families – Kid-Friendly Fun Included

Exciting Attractions for Children of all ages.

If you’re wondering whether New York is a good option for a family holiday – it absolutely is! Linda’s kids loved Madame Tussauds, and the nearby largest, sweet shop in New York City was a guaranteed crowd-pleaser. Add in Central Park playgrounds, interactive museums and family-friendly dining options, and you’ll find plenty of ways to keep everyone happy and entertained.
