Looking for a unique holiday filled with colour, culture and celebration? With new direct flights from Shannon now joining the existing direct flights from Dublin, it’s never been easier to escape to the beautiful island of Madeira. Whether you’re planning a relaxing break, or an adventure timed with one of the island’s many lively festivals, Click&Go Holidays has you covered.

Just a few weeks ago, I was lucky enough to be in Madeira during the Funchal Book Festival – a charming, literate celebration right in the heart of the city, where authors, music, and open-air book markets filled the streets. And that’s only a taste of what Madeira’s festival calendar has to offer.

From flower parades, and fireworks to wine tastings and cultural shows, this island knows how to celebrate, and you can be part of it too.

Why Choose Madeira for a holiday?

A Year-Round Island of Celebration

Madeira isn’t just a beautiful island getaway – it’s a place that loves to celebrate. With events spread across all seasons, there’s never a bad time to visit. From spring blossoms to summer fireworks, every visit will create amazing memories.

Unique Cultural and Picturesque Scenery

Madeira offers a blend of Portuguese heritage, island charm, and amazing natural beauty. It’s festivals often include traditional costumes, local music and unforgettable settings – imagine a flower parade with ocean views!

Easy Holiday Packages with Click&Go Holidays

With Click&Go Holidays, planning your holiday is easy. Choose your preferred dates, select from top-rated hotels, and bundle your flights and transfers – all in one go, with deposits from just €1pp and Flexible Payment Options.

Top Festivals in Madeira to Experience

Funchal Book Festival

This charming literary event takes over Funchal each April with open-air book stalls, author talks, and live performances. I was there last week — and the mix of books, music, and relaxed island vibes made it a real cultural treat.

Madeira Flower Festival (May)

Held in April or May, this is one of Madeira’s most iconic events. Think floral floats, street performances, and artistic flower carpets. The scent and colour are unbelievable – and yes, it’s Instagram heaven.

Atlantic Festivals and Fireworks (June)

Every Saturday in June, Funchal’s skies explode with fireworks as part of an international pyrotechnic contest. There’s also live music, food stalls, and a lively atmosphere.

Madeira Wine Festival (Late August – September)

Celebrate the island’s centuries-old winemaking tradition. Enjoy tastings, grape stomping, folk music, and a real sense of local pride.

New Year’s Eve in Funchal

Recognising by the Guinness World Records for its scale, Madeira’s NYE fireworks show is world-famous. Watching the harbour light up is a bucket-list experience.

My Local Tips for First-Time Visitors

Stay in Funchal

Most major festivals happen in or around the capital, so staying central makes exploring easy.

Book Early

Flights and hotels fill up quickly during festival season – especially spring and New Year’s.

Bring Comfy Shoes

You’ll be walking a lot, especially during parades and street events.

Try Local Food

Don’t miss traditional dishes like espada com banana and bolo do caco from street vendors during festivals.

Join a Tour or Day trip

Click&Go Holidays can connect you with guided experiences to explore beyond Funchal – from Levada Walks to Local Vineyards such as Blandy’s.

When to Book your Madeira Holiday

Best Months to Travel

April – May: Visit during spring to experience the Madeira Flower Festival, when the island bursts into colour with floral parades and artistic flower carpets. It’s one of the most visually stunning times to visit.

June: Perfect for Atlantic Festival, featuring spectacular firework shows every Saturday night over Funchal’s harbour in June. Warm evenings, music, and food markets make it a festive summer vibe.

August – September: Ideal for wine lovers! This is when Madeira Wine Festival kicks off, with grape harvesting, tastings, traditional folk events, and lively street celebrations.

December 31st: New Years Eve in Funchal is legendary. With one of the World’s most impressive firework displays, it’s truly unforgettable way to ring in the new year.

Ready to experience the Magic of Madeira?

Whether you’re drawn to flower-filled streets, world-class fireworks, or a relaxing glass of local wine under the sun, Madeira has a festival – and a holiday – just for you. With direct flights from Dublin and now Shannon, getting there has never been easier.

The post Linda’s New York City Tips – Know Before You Go appeared first on Click&Go Holidays Travel Blog.

]]>
Planning a Trip to New York City? Whether it’s your first visit or your fifth, this lively, fast-paced city always has something new to offer. These travel tips – inspired by Linda – Click&Go Holiday’s USA Product Manager, are based on her recent trip to the Big Apple. Her advice will help you plan smarter, save money, and make the most of every moment.

From airport transport hacks to choosing the right hotel and dining like a local, here’s everything you need to know before you go. Looking for great-value New York packages? Click&Go Holidays makes it easier to book not just your flights and your accommodation but also your attraction tickets too!

Getting from JFK to Manhattan

Skip the Taxi – Use the AirTrain + Subway Combo

One of Linda’s best New York travel tips is to skip the expensive taxi and instead take the AirTrain from JFK to Jamaica Station ($8.50) followed by the Subway into Midtown Manhattan ($3.20). This option is not only incredibly budget-friendly, but it’s also quick, easy, and luggage-friendly — ideal for solo travellers, couples, and families alike.

Tip: Avoid peak-hour traffic and get into the city smoothly and affordable.

Where to Stay – Match your Hotel to your Travel Style

First Timers & Families: Stay Near Time Square

According to Linda, if it’s your first time visiting New York or you’re travelling as a family, staying near Times Square is your best bet. This iconic neighbourhood is close to major attractions, Broadway theatres, and lots of family-friendly restaurants. Plus, with excellent public transport connections, it makes exploring the rest of the city a breeze.

Couples & Repeat Visitors: Try Central Park or Greenwich Village

Linda recommends near Central Park or Greenwich Village for couples or repeat travellers. These quieter, charming neighbourhoods offer a more authentic, local feel — with scenic walks, boutique hotels, and cosy cafés, perfect for a more relaxed New York city break.

Getting Around – Use the Subway like a local

Tap to Travel – It’s that easy

Linda’s tip for getting around NYC like a local? Use the subway. It’s fast, reliable, and incredibly cost-effective. You can simply tap your contactless card or Revolut card at the turnstile — no travel passes, or MetroCard needed. It’s convenient for every type of traveller, from solo city explorers to large families.

Note: Each person needs their own card, one card can’t be tapped for multiple people.

Navigating is Simple

It’s easy to figure out directions:

 • Uptown Trains head towards Central Park
 • Downtown Trains head towards the World Trade Centre

The subway is a far better alternative to taxis or Ubers, helping you save money while getting around quickly and easily.

Plan your Itinerary by Area – Maximise your Time

Day 1 – Downtown Manhattan

Linda suggests starting your trip in Lower Manhattan with a day packed with unforgettable sights:

 • Ride the free Staten Island Ferry for great views of the Statue of Liberty.
 • Visit the 9/11 Memorial & Museum
 • Head up to the One World Observatory
 • Explore the Oculus Shopping Centre
 • Walk around Wall Street and the New York Stock Exchange

Day 2 – Midtown Manhattan

Midtown is the heart of the action:

 • Discover the energy of Times Square
 • Marvel at Grand Central Terminal
 • Visit the Rockefeller Centre
 • Take in the views from SUMMIT One Vanderblit

Day 3 – Uptown & Central Park

Slow Things down a little with a relaxing uptown day:

 • Visit the American Museum of Natural History
 • Enjoy a peaceful walk-through Central Park
 • Browse the shops along Fifth Avenue

Tip: Grouping the sightseeing by area reduces travel time and helps you enjoy each day without feeling rushed.

See the City from Above – Visit an Observatory at night

One of Linda’s top tips? Plan one of your observatory visits for the evening. Watching New York skyline at night is truly magical. Whether you choose Top of the Rock, SUMMIT One Vanderbilt, or One World Observatory, each offers a breath-taking night-time experience with stunning photo opportunities.

Where to eat – Affordable Options across the City

Breakfast on a budget

Linda recommends skipping hotel breakfast and heading out for more local (and affordable) options. Grab a coffee and pastry from Starbucks, or enjoy a hearty American breakfast at Skylight Diner, located near the Wyndham New Yorker Hotel. It’s a great way to start the day without breaking your budget.

Quick & Classic NYC Lunch

For Lunch, Linda says it doesn’t have to get more New York than a slice of pizza or a hot dog from a street cart. These quick, tasty, and cheap meals are found all over Midtown and Downtown Manhattan, especially near major attractions.

For something more filling, Linda suggests visiting a local deli for a sandwich, soup or salad – perfect for a quick bite between sightseeing stops.

Dinner without the Tourist Prices

When it comes to dinner, Linda suggests eating where the locals eat. Explore the Upper East Side, especially around 79th Street and 2nd Avenue, where you’ll find great food at great prices. Another top pick? Irish pubs across the city – they serve generous portions of hearty comfort food like burgers, fish and chips, and daily specials all in warm and friendly atmospheres.

Pre-Book your Attractions and Save Up to 40%

Avoid Queues and Save Money on Top NYC Experiences

Linda’s Advice? Pre-book your attractions. Most major NYC sights – including observatories, museums, and city tours – offer discounted prices and skip-the-line access when booking in advance. Booking early means less time queuing and more time exploring.

Click&Go Holidays can help you book all your attractions in advance – just call us on 01-6995250 to talk to one of our USA Experts.

Don’t Miss a Broadway Show – A Must-do NYC Experience

Theatre Lovers and First Timers will be blown away

One of Linda’s biggest highlights from her New York trip was seeing a Broadway show – and it’s easy to see why. From The Lion King and Hamilton to newer hits and timeless classics, there’s nothing quite like the thrill of live theatre in the heart of Manhattan. Book Early to get the best seats and avoid disappointment, especially during peak travel periods.

Click&Go Holidays can include Broadway Tickets in your holiday package – just ask our team when booking.

New York for Families – Kid-Friendly Fun Included

Exciting Attractions for Children of all ages.

If you’re wondering whether New York is a good option for a family holiday – it absolutely is! Linda’s kids loved Madame Tussauds, and the nearby largest, sweet shop in New York City was a guaranteed crowd-pleaser. Add in Central Park playgrounds, interactive museums and family-friendly dining options, and you’ll find plenty of ways to keep everyone happy and entertained.

Planning your first trip to Denver? Nestled at the foot of the Rocky Mountains, Denver is a lively sun-soaked city packed with culture, adventure and natural beauty. Also known as the Mile-High City because it sits exactly 5,280 feet, (1609 Metres) above sea level, Denver is a place where city energy meets mountain charm.

Whether you’re stopping through on a bigger USA adventure or planning a dedicated holiday, this guide will give you a solid feel for what to expect – and why Denver should be next on your travel list.

Denver at a Glance – What to Expect?

The Atmosphere

Denver has a relaxed, outdoorsy atmosphere with a growing arts scene, a deep love for craft beer, and a contagious energy. Locals are friendly, active, and generally up for a hike, or a bike ride. It’s also an incredibly dog-friendly city – don’t be surprised if you see dogs lounging in cafés or breweries.

The Weather

Denver gets over 300 days of sunshine a year, which makes it a fantastic year-round destination. Winters bring snow to nearby ski resorts, but the city itself stays relatively mild with sunny skies. Summers are warm but not humid, perfect for exploring parks and outdoor attractions. Spring and Autumn offer stunning scenery and fewer crowds.

The Culture

You’ll find a blend of urban sophistication and laid-back mountain vibes. From buzzing street art in the RiNo (River North) district to the impressive Denver Art Museum, there’s something for every interest. It’s also a hub for music lovers – with Red Rock Amphitheatre hosting concerts in an open-air setting carving into natural rock formations.

Top Things To Do in Denver for First-Time Visitors

Must See Attractions

If you’re wondering where to start, Union Station is your gateway to downtown. This historic train station has been transformed into a trendy hub with restaurants, cafés, and boutique shops – perfect for a meal anytime, coffee or cocktail.

The Denver Art Museum offers world-class exhibits, while the Botanic Gardens provide a peaceful escape in the heart of the city. Families will love Denver Zoo and the Downtown Aquarium too!

Getting Around Denver

The city is easy to navigate, From Denver International Airport (DEN), the A Line train takes you downtown in 37 minutes. Within the city, the light rail, rideshares, and scooters make getting around simple.

For First timers, staying in Downtown Denver is ideal. You’ll be close to major attractions, restaurants, and transport links. If you’re after boutique vibes or great shopping, consider Cherry Creek.

Know Before you Go – Tips for First-Time Visitors

Altitude Adjustment

At a mile high, some visitors feet the effects of altitude. Stay hydrated, avoid too much alcohol on day one, and take it easy when you arrive.

Packing Essentials

Weather can change quickly – even in summer, it’s smart to pack a light jacket. Don’t forget sunscreen, regardless of season!

Booking in Advance

Popular attractions and mountain day trips can sell out during peak seasons, so it’s worth planning ahead.

Often called a mini continent because of its incredibly diverse landscapes, Gran Canaria offers everything from golden beaches and lush mountains to beautiful villages and lively city life. And thanks to its subtropical climate, it’s a great pick any time of the year – yes even in December!

Whether you’re soaking up the sun in Maspalomas, tasting banana delicacies in Arucas, or exploring the dramatic scenery of Roque Nublo, there’s always something new to discover.

Gran Canaria Itinerary: 5 Days of Beaches, Culture & Nature

Day 1: Arrival & Dunes in Maspalomas

After a smooth flight, we were whisked off to the south of the island for check-in at the Seaside Palm Beach Hotel—a five-star retreat right beside the Maspalomas Dunes. Surrounded by palm groves and protected natural areas, it’s the ideal place to unwind after your journey.

Evening Tip: Enjoy your first Canarian dinner al fresco at the hotel’s restaurant. The atmosphere is relaxed, the wine is flowing, and the food is top-notch.

Day 2: Bananas, Tapas and Old Town Charm

We kicked off the day with a visit to La ReKompensa, a unique banana plantation and open-air museum. It’s a great way to learn about the local agriculture (and yes, there are banana product tastings! It was so good I brought home a jar of mojo rojo).

Next, we wandered the historic town of Arucas, before heading to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria for lunch at Mercado del Puerto, a lively market with tapas stalls, fresh produce, and a fun, casual atmosphere.

We finished with a sunset stroll through Vegueta, the city’s oldest quarter, full of cobbled streets, colonial architecture, and hidden gems such as the Columbus museum.

Day 3: Boat Trips and Seaside Glamour

After breakfast at the adults-only Bohemia Suites & Spa, we explored the Radisson Blu at Anfi Beach, then took a scenic boat ride to Mogán Harbour – one of the most picturesque spots on the island.

We checked into Hotel Cordial Mogán Playa, a colourful Canarian-style hotel nestled in a botanical garden. That evening, we dressed up for a spectacular gala dinner and show at Scala Gran Canaria. Called ORIGIN, it’s a 360-degree sensory experience combining local storytelling with live music, acrobatics, and fine dining, this is something I cannot recommend enough.

Michelle’s Tip: If you’re after something truly special, book the wine pairing option – it’s well worth it!

Day 4: Volcano Views & Village Life

Time to explore the island’s stunning interior. We headed north to Teror, a charming town famous for its wooden balconies and basilica, before continuing to Tejeda, a mountain village with jaw-dropping views.

Along the way we stopped at viewpoints looking out over Roque Nublo, a dramatic volcanic rock formation that defines the island’s skyline. Lunch at Parador Cruz de Tejeda was a treat – complete with a terrace view over a “sea of clouds”.

Day 5: Coastal Charm & Goodbye Sunshine

Our final day was all about taking it slow and enjoying the last of the Gran Canaria’s charm. With a few free hours before our flight, we had some time to explore the local area, take in some sea views and pop into nearby shops for a final taste of island life.

After a relaxing lunch by the coast, we had time to freshen up, pack our bags and soak in the last bit of sunshine before heading to the airport. The perfect peaceful end to a trip filled with adventure discovery and warm memories.

Top Travel Tips for Visiting Gran Canaria

Don’t just stay by the beach

While the southern coast is stunning, the island’s heart is full of hidden gems. A day trip to the mountains or northern villages adds so much depth to your visit.

Renting a Car is worth it

To really see the island, especially the smaller towns and viewpoints, having your own car makes a big difference and allows you to explore the island at your pace.

Pack for Different Climates

Even in the sunniest months, it can get cool up in the mountains – so bring a light jacket and good walking shoes along with your swimwear.

Try the Local Food

From papas arrugadas (wrinkled potatoes) to mojo sauces and fresh seafood, Gran Canarian’s food scene is full of flavour. The tapas scene in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is a particular highlight.

Visit Year-round

Whether you visit in summer or winter, the island’s subtropical climate makes it a reliable escape from colder weather back home.

Final thoughts

Gran Canaria truly has it all: stunning beaches, dramatic landscapes, lively culture, and relaxing resorts. Whether you’re looking to explore the island’s natural wonders, indulge in a little luxury, or simply unwind under the sun, Gran Canaria is an incredible destination – any time of the year.

After five days of amazing food, breathtaking views, warm hospitality, and unforgettable moments, I can confidently say: I will be back.
